An exhibition of ceramic mosaics & textile wall hangings by Sue Kershaw

‘Putting the Pieces Together’An exhibition of ceramic mosaics & textile wall hangingsby Sue Kershaw“Life is a complex picture and breaking it up into parts before rebuilding it can sometimes help make sense of it all! I have always had a fascination with ‘pieces’ from childhood jigsaws, to colouring in ‘Altair’ designs, building paper and shell collages, to patchwork and short story writing.

In my mosaics and textile wall hangings, I ‘undo the pieces’ seeing the completed image first before stripping it down into parts.I have been hooked on mosaics since holidaying in Ravenna in Italy, during the early 1990s. This, and further explorations of the Roman sites of Britain, Italy, Spain and Greece, have inspired a whole series of mosaic wall plaques, some of which are based upon original Roman floor designs. Each are produced with hand-cut double fired French porcelain tesserae which has an impervious matt surface, very similar to the natural stone colours of the Roman and Byzantine mosaics, mounted on a hardboard backing suitable for wall or tabletop display. In sharp textural and colour contrast, I also produce original bright and bold contemporary textile wall hangings using solid blocks of colour in 100% cotton fabric, reflecting both a love of geometric shapes and nature.

All of my textile works are completed using a form of the English piecing method whereby each piece of fabric, stiffened with interfacing, is secured to an accurately cut card shape. The fabric pieces are positioned right sides together and hand-stitched. The foundation cards are removed on completion. The design is then machine finished off at the back of the picture and stretched over a hardboard frame for wall hanging.”Opening Times: Tues 10am - 4pm, Thurs 10am - 1pm, Fri 10am - 4pm, Sat 9.30am - 1pm and during live/cinema events.
